I recently purchased a Dell Vostro 1720, which comes as standard with the IDT 98HD8XX onboard sound card - I formatted and installed Windows XP (from Vista, for program compatibility reasons) on recieving the laptop, and installed the latest XP drivers for the card from the Dell site.

As I didn't opt for the built-in webcam, there is only the option of an external mic jack. When recording from a (checked) working microphone, there is a continuous high pitched sound over the top of the recording. The actual recording itself is not very clear either, and is very very distorted. The issue occurs both when a microphone is plugged in, or whether the internal playback of the laptop is being recorded (directly via the XP mixer).

I have tried reinstalling the drivers, changing power management options (including testing with and without a battery charger plugged in), sound card options, even changing seemingly unrelated hardware options (such as disabling power management for USB Root Hubs, altering wireless card - Intel WiFi 5100 - modes from N to G only, etc.), changing options including microphone boost, muting PC Speaker and CD Player volumes in the volume mixer, etc, all to no avail. I hope someone here can help me, and help soon!

I love this laptop right now - with the 9600M GS onboard its a surprising powerhouse for a cheaper laptop - and everything is perfect about it for me, except the recording issue! I do have a spare USB 8 channel sound card lying around which I guess is a workaround, but I'd prefer to use the in-built sound as much as possible - it just makes life a bit easier! If needs be, I can upload some MP3s of the sound so you can get an idea of whats happening:) Hope someone can help!
